Of course, I did not come directly to Mt. Pleasant…there were things to see between Lumberton, NC and Mt. Pleasant and I wanted to see as much as I could.
My first stop is unnamed…I have no idea where I was and I did not think to check my compass. I happened to be driving down the road and I saw this area to the right of me as I was driving over the bridge. I immediately slowed down and pulled off the road. The area I pulled into was pretty muddy and I found out from the gentleman who was there preparing to fish that it was the first time he had been able to go back to his favorite fishing place since “the big rain” the previous month. It was a Sunday and his wife was home “cooking up a storm” and he quietly sneaked out of the house to fish and give her peace! Awesome gentleman to have a conversation with on a gorgeous first day of March.
Getting back in the car my next planned destination is Prince Frederick’s Chapel Ruins also known as the Old Gunn Chapel Ruins in Plantersville, SC. Legend has it that sometime in the early 1860’s the contractor of the project, Mr. Gunn, fell from the church roof and died. Now his spirit haunts the grounds. It’s said that his ghost can be seen in the bell tower. I did not feel a malevolent spirit while I was there but I did notice the pine tree growing above the bell tower.
My last stop before heading on to the hotel was Murrells Inlet, SC and the boardwalk there. What a beautiful spot and a very friendly couple took me to two spots along the boardwalk when they saw my camera so I could take pictures of jelly fish they saw…one of them was huge and I had never seen one with those colors before! When I checked in on Facebook with a picture of the jelly fish several of my friends said they loved this spot and had been here several times.
And now it is time to enjoy 4 glorious nights at Shem Creek Inn. I already told the story of my disappointment with the receptionist checking me in and my first room so no need to repeat that. Both rooms were lovely but the view out of the balcony of the second room they gave me was what I expected and paid for in advance. Once I finally got settled in that second room it was getting late and I wanted to go out, walk the boardwalk and get some sunset pictures of the area. There are a lot of boats and businesses along the creek putting color into the water after dusk…so pretty. Below are pictures of the lobby, my first room and the sunset view out that window, the crazy 3 sided clock showing the time on 3 sides and part of the view off the new balcony.
And now time for a walk on the boardwalk along Shem Creek. Water’s Edge Cabana Bar…right outside my balcony one level…lots of loud people and loud music but I didn’t care. I couldn’t hear it much with the slider closed and the TV was on and everything got quiet around 10 PM.
It has been an awesome day but I need some sleep. I only visit one place tomorrow and did some grocery shopping to restock my supplies. But the following day I will be very busy. Be sure to come back for the journey!
